Understanding Cost of Living Comparisons

What Makes This Cost of Living Calculator Different

Most cost of living calculators show you price differences and stop there. This tool goes further by combining Numbeo cost of living data with real income tax calculations for 48 countries. Enter your gross annual salary and the calculator computes your net take-home pay in both cities, then compares it against local prices for rent, groceries, transport, healthcare, and more.

The result is a complete financial picture — not just whether a city is cheaper, but whether you will actually have more money in your pocket after taxes and expenses. Tax calculations use official government brackets for a single filer with standard deductions, so the figures reflect what a typical employee would take home.

How to Compare Cost of Living Between Countries

Select your current city from the dropdown — type any city name and pick from the list. Then select the city or country you are considering moving to. Enter your gross annual salary for each location and set a monthly savings rate between 0% and 50%.

Click Compare and the tool generates a side-by-side breakdown instantly. You will see your net income after taxes in both cities, a cost of living index comparison, and a detailed category-by-category analysis showing where prices are higher or lower.

What Is Included in the Cost of Living Comparison

The comparison covers 12 expense categories: city-centre and suburban rent for different apartment sizes, grocery and supermarket prices, restaurant and dining costs, public transport passes, fuel and taxi fares, utility bills, internet and mobile plans, gym memberships, entertainment, clothing, and childcare costs.

Each category uses a cost of living index where New York City equals 100. A city scoring 70 means living expenses in that category are roughly 30% lower than New York. This standardised index lets you compare any two cities on equal terms regardless of local currency.

Data Sources and Methodology

Cost of living data comes from Numbeo, the largest crowd-sourced price database in the world. Tax calculations are built from official government tax rules for 48 countries, coded directly into the tool and updated for 2026 brackets.

Currency conversions use daily exchange rates from FloatRates. All comparisons are presented in both local currencies and a common base so you can evaluate the financial impact of relocating without manual conversion.
